Avoid Montezuma's Revenge…Use These Four Tips
A trip to Mexico is one you’ll remember as long as you live. Mexico is full of unique places to see. It is really a country that has it all. You can choose to spend your time on pristine beaches. Or visit archaeological dig sites. You can soak up nature's bounty in infinite locations. You can even just pass your time enjoying the amenities of a four star resort. A lot of visitors though contract Montezuma's revenge, commonly known as traveler's diarrhea while in Mexico, and there are four safe ways to prevent it.
First, it is important to know something about this medical condition. It affects around up to fifty percent of all tourists who visit third world countries every year. It is caused by the e.coli bacteria that nest in your digestive tract. The most common symptoms of this illness are increased frequency, volume, and weight of stool, frequent loose stools (you can have anywhere from four to twelve watery bowel movements every day you are experiencing the condition), abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, fever, and bloating. More serious cases lead to dehydration, which may result in hospitalization. There are many different treatments, but none as effective as time itself.
It is best to prevent this medical condition entirely. You can start by avoiding intake of the water. Don’t even think of drinking the tap water. You may find it interesting that citizens of the country are able to drink the tap water and use it for many different purposes. This is because their digestive tracts are attuned to the bacteria in the water. Just because the locals can safely drink the water and use it for various purposes does not mean you have the same ability. If you are forced to drink tap water, be sure you boil it for at least of ten minutes before you drink it. This should rid it of all bacteria. When you brush your teeth, make sure you avoid using the water from the tap. Even a small amount can contain the bacteria that will make you sick. When you buy bottled water, ensure the seal has not been broken or tampered with. If the bottles just contain refilled tap water, you will still have real problems. Be sure that you don’t eat any of the salads in the restaurants. Their leaves are always washed with tap water, and even a minimal amount will set the bacteria in motion.
Another way to protect yourself from Montezuma’s Revenge is to only eat fruits that have a peel or fruits that you have washed yourself using bottled water. If you are served fresh fruit in a restaurant, it is not enough to just ask the waiter how the fruit was washed. If you really want to prevent this wretched medical condition, you must do everything yourself.
Yet another way to prevent Montezuma's Revenge is to avoid all food sold by street vendors. They may tempt you, but these foods can make you sick faster than anything else. You have no idea either how the food was washed or how it was prepared. Moreover, you know nothing of how well the meats are cooked
One final way to prevent this problem is to avoid places that you know will serve you re-warmed food. Bacteria start multiplying on food as it cools. Therefore, the re-warming process will not kill the bacteria formed on the food, and this can be a real problem. It certainly indicates that you will get sick from the food.
Here a gist of the tips. Safe items while traveling are freshly prepared dishes served steaming hot, meats that have been cooked to order (always order well done meat), fruits that you have peeled or washed yourself, breads and baked goods, hot drinks like tea and coffee, bottled or boiled water, and other drinks. Remember to stay away from tap water, ice, uncooked vegetables or peeled fruits that you have not washed with bottled water yourself, cold salads, buffets, food sold by vendors on the street, and any food that has been re-warmed.
